Dalam Al-Quran istilah 'khamar' adalah digunakan bagi semua bahan yang memabukkan atau boleh menghilangkan akal fikiran. Dadah boleh dikategorikan sebagai satu jenis 'khamar' kerana ia boleh memabukkan, mengkhayalkan dan menyebabkan ketagihan, gangguan tingkah laku dan sebagainya.
Rasulullah S.A.W pernah bersabda :
"Setiap yang memabukkan adalah khamar dan setiap yang memabukkan adalah haram"

Kata-kata di atas menunjukkan pendirian agama Buddha bahawa penyalahgunaan dadah merosakkan diri sendiri, masyarakat dan negara.

Sebuah Buku Tamil (Kural) menyebutkan bahawa :
"Dipisahkan daripada deria adalah mereka yang memabukkan diri (pengguna dadah), tidak ada bezanya mereka dariada yang tidur mahupun mati"
Dharma Hindu mengatakan bahawa setiap tindakan seseorang adalah dikawal oleh Dharma atau sifat yang terpuji. Setiap perbuatan atau tingkah laku yang salah, berbahaya atau mencederakan diri mereka atau orang lain dikira 'adharmic' di mana balasannya adalah penderitaan. Oleh kerana itu, penggunaan dadah juga dianggap 'adharmic'.

Hindu Dharma says that every action a person is controlled by the Dharma or Traits. Every act or behavior is wrong, dangerous or injure themselves or other people considered 'adharmic' where the reward is suffering. Therefore, the use of drugs is also considered 'adharmic.
